Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Yuna Yuki
◎ Character's Canon: Yuki Yuna is a Hero
◎ Character's Age: 14
◎ Canon Point: Following the Vertex battle in episode 5
◎ Background/History: Yuna's page at the Yuyuyu wiki, and the five episode summaries relevant to this application, since Yuna's page doesn't really discuss the events of the series.
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nope.

◎ Personality: Yuna is an extremely happy-go-lucky, positive person. She loves to help people, which is a large part of why she joined the Hero Club, a group dedicated to meeting the needs of anyone who asks for their help. People regularly send them requests, and they do their best to help every single one get resolved. This can range from helping to find a home for kittens to putting on school plays for children to teach them about friendship and morals, and Yuna treats each job with equal importance.

She is strongly devoted to her friends, desiring to protect them even at a cost to herself. While Fu and Itsuki had been able to adapt to the arrival of the first Vertex quickly, Yuna felt that she couldn't leave the terrified Togo alone and took her to safety; once her best friend was in immediate danger, however, she leapt forward to defend her, believing she was risking her life in the process. She is extremely emotionally strong for her age, capable of keeping her head up and forcing herself to be happy even when she doesn't want to be, and displays a fortitude well beyond her 14 years.

It's not an exaggeration to say she is the anchor of the Hero Club, because without her, it would simply not be the same. She is the one who tries the hardest to reach out to Karin, who is at first uninterested in making friends, ultimately winning her over with a surprise birthday party. She's also the one who is most successful at convincing Fu that she doesn't need to blame herself for getting everyone involved with the Taisha. That scene in particular is extremely important for Yuna's character, because she admits that even if she knew she would suffer, she would still have chosen to join the Hero Club, and believes everyone else would too. It's a genuinely moving sentiment, but it also shows that she's willing to take on enormous burdens and suffer if it means she can prevent that fate for someone else. It's also an example of her need to spin things positively; by becoming Heroes, she argues, the five girls never would have met each other, so it's ultimately a good thing.

But even Yuna has a breaking point.

During the events of episodes 10 and 11, Togo comes to the conclusion that the only way to free the Heroes from their fate is to let the Vertexes into their world, letting them kill the Shinju and effectively destroy everything. Of course, everyone is shocked to hear Togo's decision, and Yuna is so shaken she is unable to fight or even simply transform due to her mental state. In the face of her world ending around her, the fact that she hadn't figured out what Togo was planning indicated to her that she had been a failure as a friend, and it's such a devastating thought that it completely paralyzes her on an emotional level. It isn't until after Karin sacrifices her legs, her sight, and her hearing that Yuna finally has a clear enough head to try to stop Togo. Karin got hurt because Yuna was too upset to do anything - so that meant she had to do whatever she could to make sure Karin's sacrifices weren't in vain, even if it meant confronting her best friend.

While I'm on the subject, it would be remiss of me to not discuss her relationship with Togo, as she's a motivating factor behind some of the most important decisions Yuna makes. To put it bluntly, Togo is the single person that Yuna cares for the most. Everything she does is for Togo's sake. She was the first person to meet Togo after she moved in next door to her, she's the one who pushes Togo's wheelchair everywhere, she shields Togo with her own body multiple times throughout the series, and protecting Togo was her primary motivation for becoming a Hero and for confronting her in Episode 12. Though Togo believes it would be better for the world to end, because their lives are a living hell, Yuna responds immediately: "It can't be hell, because I'm with you." When Togo eventually comes to her senses, it's because Yuna's complete devotion to her has made her realize that there's still value in their lives because they have each other. The strength of Yuna's love for her best friend is unparalleled, and further exemplifies her fierce dedication to the people she cares about.

That dedication is what ultimately leads her to sacrifice herself trying to destroy an enormous Vertex Togo brought with her. The Vertex had encased itself in energy, and even with the power of Mankai, it seemed impossible that just one person would be able to destroy it.

Yuna tried to destroy it anyway.

She succeeded, but at a tremendous cost. By sacrificing herself in this manner, she fell into a vegetative state, with the understanding that whatever aftereffects she may suffer would be permanent. Though that assumption is later disproved, it displays another one of Yuna's major character traits: her self-sacrificial nature. This is a recurring theme throughout the series. I previously mentioned above that she shields Togo with her body several times, but she's also the person who attacks the first Vertex the Hero Club encounters after their first Mankai. Everyone else hesitated to attack because they were afraid they may incur more damage to their bodies, so Yuna decided that if anyone was going to have that happen, it would be her. By intervening in a fight between Karin and Fu, she blocks several large hits, increasing her Mankai gauge - most notably, she is the only person who takes actions that would fill the gauge until the final episode. Related to this is her tendency to hide her negative feelings from her friends, because she doesn't want to drag them down. For instance, upon losing her sense of taste, she decided not to tell anyone until Togo asked her about it, once she knew she couldn't hide her condition from someone who knows her so well. She doesn't mind suffering if it means that she can make other people smile - she'll gladly shoulder the burden so that others don't have to.

For all her strengths, she's still a 14-year-old student, so Yuna acts for the most part as a typical teenage girl. She likes udon and pressing flowers, she loves to eat sweets made by Togo, and she cherishes her friends. She can be scatterbrained to the point that people call her stupid sometimes, but always does her best to make up for her mistakes. She takes her club duties seriously, but also sets aside time to fool around, and pulls people aside to cheer them up if they need it. She gives people the benefit of the doubt more often than not, even going so far as to provide excuses for people when they've done something genuinely wrong. She never once blames Togo for what she does, because she knows in her heart that Togo was doing what she felt was right, and that's good enough for her. She truly does believe the best of everybody she knows, even after she's been presented with a situation where no one would blame her for cursing the world and the people who condemned her to a horrifying fate. Yuna, above all, wants everyone to be happy, and she wants to be the person to make them happy, ready to give her all for that purpose. And with her big heart, pleasant disposition, and radiant smile, more often than not, she's just the girl to do it.

◎ Powers/Abilities: By using her Terminal, she's capable of transforming into a Hero. Every Hero has a different specialty, and for Yuna, that's direct combat with her fists and legs. Despite displaying no proficiency in the martial arts prior to her transformation, she's shown to have excellent reflexes and physical strength while a Hero. She's even capable of punching quickly enough to deflect bullets.

Her attack style is completely offensive, so it's a good thing she's got Gyuki, her faery, to block any fatal attacks for her. He's so good at it that he basically renders Yuna unable to die under any circumstance, in fact. I did read the question asked about the mechanics from this canon on the FAQ page, however, so I'm aware that he'll no longer be able to protect her to that extent in the event she gets her Terminal back! Yuna eventually acquires a second faery named Kasha, as well, who provides similar protection, but this isn't until beyond the canon point I'm taking her from, so it shouldn't come up unless I canon update her.

Another aspect of the Hero transformation is Mankai and the phenomenon that results from it, called Sange. Mankai is a huge power boost that Heroes can activate once they've used enough fierce attacks or taken enough damage, essentially overpowering them to the point that they can get out of desperate situations. Yuna's Mankai grants her control of two enormous, floating arms that mimic the movements she makes with her own, drastically increasing her range and damage. It's also only after using Mankai that she's given her second faery, which Heroes acquire more of the more frequently they use Mankai.

However, in exchange for using this power, a Hero must sacrifice something - it can be a sense, a body part, or even memories. This is Sange, and it is incurable until the Shinju eventually releases the Hero who's offered a sacrifice.

By the canon point I'm taking her from, Yuna has lost her sense of taste as a result of using Mankai once.

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory: Her school uniform.

CEREALIA-Specific

◎ Element: Heart Fire! My Internet sleuthing tells me that fire is the element most associated with determination and strength, so it feels most appropriate for Yuna, who has these qualities in spades.
◎ Sense: Taste. While she's being apped from a canon point where she's already lost this sense, it's definitely the most important to her. Togo's snacks are some of her favorite things in the world, and when discussing her condition, she mentions that not being able to taste anything makes her feel half-alive.

Samples

◎ First-Person Sample: A test drive thread.

◎ Third-Person Sample: She'd been minding her own business, exploring this strange mansion, when she heard the crying. It wasn't a voice she recognized, but it distressed her all the same - was someone else here? Had they gotten lost? It was impossible to tell where the sound was coming from, and the only way forward was down the hall, so that's where she went.

As she carefully advanced, still straining her ears to find the source of the sound, the crying got louder. Heartened by this, knowing she was getting closer, Yuna picked up her pace. She opened her mouth to call out for the other person, but it was at that moment that the lights went out, leaving only the echo of a wail for her to go by. Yuna instinctively began running. It was the only thing she could think of to do. She was terrified, yes, and her heart leapt to her throat when she heard someone's footsteps just behind her.

But the person who was crying must have been suffering even more. After all, they'd been so upset even before the lights went out.

"Hello?!" It was impossible to see where she was going, now, and she nearly tripped over the corner of a rug. "Where are you?! If you make a sound, I can find you, and we can get out together...!" To her dismay, there was no response from the crying person. The only response she received was the quickened pace of the footsteps following her.

Her legs felt like they were going to fall off, but her only option was to keep running. If she got caught, she didn't know what would happen to her, and she didn't want to find out. Without her Terminal, she couldn't access her powers, so she had to rely solely on herself. Between heavy, desperate breaths, she called out again. "If you won't...tell me where you are, then...at least escape! I'll...see if I can..."

I'll see if I can lead whatever is chasing me away. That's what she wanted to say, but before she could, she stumbled into something. She'd reached the end of the hall, and the only way to run now was back toward the footsteps. She couldn't give up now, just because she ran into a dead end. She balled her hands into fists, whispering to herself, "Hero Club Tenet Five...you're likely to succeed if you try!"

Following it up with a wordless cry to motivate herself, she went to meet the mysterious entity in the darkness. She was absolutely terrified, of course. But it was even more terrifying to think that she couldn't do something for the person who had been crying, so leaving them behind to escape wasn't an option. After all, Yuna was a hero.
